iPark: The great EV equaliser – An app-free service that makes electric vehicle charging available and easy for everyone

It all began with one EV enthusiast who wanted to start a small charging business in his home yard but found no suitable solution – so he came up with one himself. Now iPark’s easy-to-use platform helps businesses and homeowners turn their parking spots into EV charging stations, making everyday life easier for EV drivers, too: the frustration of navigating between different apps is finally over, because with iPark you can just park, scan, pay, and start charging, without having to download or open a single app! It is no exaggeration to say that iPark is changing prevalent practices and the whole industry by making EV charging frictionless, app-free, and truly accessible for all.

Field of business dreams

When iPark’s co-founder Victor Mukherjee wanted to start a small EV charging
business by renting out his own parking space, he quickly faced a problem. Existing
solutions were too expensive and not designed for small businesses with limited
parking spots. That sparked the idea of creating a more suitable solution for everyone.
To achieve this goal, Mukherjee needed a team.

The iPark team members were brought together by a shared passion for smart mobility
and clean energy, their office debates often revolving around the best EVs on the
market. Surprisingly, the story of iPark’s founding has nothing to do with cars, but a
chance meeting at another hobby two of them shared: co-founders Mukherjee and
Dimansha Wijebandara had already worked together before, then met again in a
cricket game. The third co-founder, Aruna Wickramasinghe, was a friend and a former
colleague of Wijebandara’s, and joined the team soon after. Now the wheels had really
started turning, and iPark began to take shape.

Whether you’re charging money or your EV, iPark makes it easy

The complexity of charging an electric vehicle is a major roadblock for a lot of car
drivers: it can be hard to find parking lots where you are allowed to charge your EV, and you might need different apps to be able to use the available spaces. This is especially challenging for tourists and travellers, who must find out in advance where they can park and charge their electric vehicles. Personal experience with the problem in question was another major reason Mukherjee set out to create iPark.

“As an EV driver travelling across Europe, I found it frustrating that every 100 kilometres
I had to download a new app just to charge my car. Unlike fuelling at a petrol station,
where you simply pay and refuel, EV charging required unnecessary steps, making the
experience inconvenient”, he tells.

What EV drivers needed was a service they could use anywhere, anytime, without any
preparations. That is exactly what iPark offers: just park your car at a spot that is part of
the network, then scan the QR code there, pay using Apple Pay or MobilePay, and start
charging! No downloads or applications are needed, just your phone. This makes EV
charging truly accessible for all, whether you are a local or not, and that is what sets
iPark apart from competitors.

The service is simple to use for charging station operators as well: iPark is compatible
with all major charging station models, and they handle everything from station setup to system integration. The platform also supports different business models, from pay-per-use to subscription-based services, making it a suitable solution for all kinds of
operators, both big and small.

The future is what drives this team forward

The long-term objective is to expand iPark internationally, starting with India and
Nordics. Short-term plans include targeting Northern Finland, where a lot of tourists
visit every year and struggle with the same problems that are very familiar to Mukherjee. The road to international success is long, but also a journey well worth taking.

“Startup life is all about the hustle, but for us, it’s a passion-driven mission. We
embrace the challenges because we believe in our long-term vision – creating a lasting impact on the environment and building a more sustainable future for the next
generation”, Mukherjee explains.

By making EV charging more widely available and charging stations more profitable to
own, iPark helps increase EV usage and reduce fossil fuel reliance, accelerating the
transition to a cleaner transportation ecosystem – and the pace is picking up with every parking place added to the network.
