Urban Tech Helsinki gaining momentum! – September newsletter

”Midterms” for Autumn 2024 Urban Tech Helsinki Startups

Urban Tech Helsinki’s newest batch of startups is having their midterms in early October. The Winds of Change event on October 9th at Maria 01 in Helsinki is a speed dating event where Urban Tech Helsinki incubator’s latest batch of startups meet stakeholders. Learn more about the startups to take part.

The aim is to find the right contact and eventually open the doors for collaboration with cities, city-owned companies, Aalto University, Metropolia, Helsinki University, and other urban tech-related stakeholders. The stakeholders get to know about new solutions and can develop their activities, while the startups will gain valuable information and the right contacts to help them, e.g. in finding pilots or just verifying their solutions’ product market fit.

“We found good contacts at Metropolia University of Applied Science in the Winds of Change event and it has given us a route to research projects that have helped us to develop our solution and business”, explains Make a BIM CEO Leo Salomaa.

The event is open for stakeholders and investors, but requires registration. Register here.

The next event after Winds of Change is Startup Spotlight on December 13th. From 12.00 to 16.00 at Maria 01. You will hear Urban Tech Startup pitches and network with the stakeholders, so keep your calendar free!

Awards deals and active events participation: What our startups have been up to

Urban Tech Helsinki Startups have made some great progress in the past month or so.

CeroHero, part of our autumn batch, has secured a Proof of Concept agreement in Dubai. They will be assisting a local organization with real-time monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV). More details on this deal will be shared soon.

An older member of the ecosystem, Ekotekt won a prestigious award at The PropTech/ConTech StartUp & Scale-up Europe Awards 2024. They won one of the top 13 category awards. It is a great validation of their idea and hopefully leads to further business growth. The awards are supported and promoted by the European Commission, the President of the European Parliament, the President of the European Committee of the Regions, the Vice-President of the European Economic and Social Committee, and several members of the European Parliament, aligned with the principles of the New European Bauhaus. More on the victory from here.

Another startup that has benefitted from being part of the incubator is AIIO. They are progressing with several pilots with Urban Tech Helsinki Partners. The company is starting to pilot its keyless MobileKey.IO entry control solution at Urban Tech Helsinki partner Maria 01’s premises. They are retrofitting the old building with a solution for KiraHUB’s Urban3 premises with a mobile application. The same technology is used at the Helsinki Airport Startup Runway to access a room at Avia Pilot with biometric recognition. The application can be used to enter, for example, Metropolia Smartlab as it is scalable next to any digital lock. AIIO is a good example of Urban Tech Helsinki network’s power as it uses Aalto Startup Center services to run its independent cloud-based, cyber-secure, keyless, and passwordless access management services.

HemmaKoti on the other hand is reshaping its operations to a more traditional SME model. While doing so, it has agreed on a pilot with Vantaa and Kerava Wellbeing Services County and Virtaamo to servitize their offering and resale them to businesses and other organizations. They are also in the finals of Sorter’s radio ad campaign to get some “free” air time on Sanoma Media radio channels. So go and vote!

Urban Tech Startups have been active participants in several events. Seven startups were pitching at the Aalto Startup Center booth in NORDEEP and three attended the Dubai ITS World Congress. The three struck accords to help one another to access new markets. A great example of the power of the community!

Urban Tech Helsinki as part of Aalto Startup Center Community

Urban Tech Helsinki startups are also part of the Aalto Startup Center community. They attend the Business Generator Programme as well as have the possibility to use the facilities in Otaniemi, Espoo.

This is an important extra resource for the startups as they are able to tap into the expertise of Aalto Startup Centre experts, but more importantly get peer-to-peer support as well as the contacts of the community whether trying to find partners, investors, or event research help.
