the story of VIS Vacuum Insulation Solutions
The story starts in 2015 when Pasi Herranen started thinking about creating energy efficient, moisture resistant and sustainable construction materials by combining wood engineering with vacuum insulation. After working on developing this new technology for almost three years, he decided it was time to move on to the commercialization phase in 2017 and contacted Orvokki Ihalainen and Panu Miettinen, two of his economist’s friends, to join the project. Together they created the business plans and then the project joined Aalto University in 2018. With Teppo Toivonen, who has a long history in the food business and has been working with startups for 10 years, joining the project in 2019, they had a solid team and a promising plan.
Thinking about food production with a holistic view, now the team has combined VIS with the best smart data and plant cultivation solutions to create a ground-breaking new technology. Their vision for the future with this technology is to make urban farming simple, profitable, and more environmentally friendly for everyone all across the world.
From Helsinki To The Whole World
Right now the company is operating in Helsinki and is aiming to enable the city’s people to grow and get access to local food that is cultivated through sustainable means. They have already planned a vertical farming project for Helsinki and have discussed their solutions with the city’s representatives. Also, through the Urban Tech Helsinki program, they took part in good workshops and made a lot of valuable connections. Moreover, they got so much help from Urban Tech Helsinki’s advisors on areas such as IPR and valuation.
The team is planning to build their first international vertical farm that is built with VIS, preferably in a very warm country, as their main goal for 2022. Following this, they want to get projects from all over the world and to make their technology the standard method in creating vertical farms. In order to achieve their bold aims, the team is in need of investors with a long-term vision and creative minds who have experience in fields such as construction tech, vertical farming, data solutions, who can help them bring these goals into life.
